Storm-worn CT gets $13M to feed poor

Connecticut is getting $13 million in federal aid to help more than 208,000 low-income households replace food spoiled during power outages and flooding from Tropical Storm Irene, authorities say.

State Social Services Commissioner Roderick L. Bremby announced the funding from the U.S. Agriculture Department’s Food and Nutrition Service.

Connecticut households enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps, are immediately eligible to collect an amount equal to one quarter of their regular SNAP allotment for August.

That calculates to a one-time boost ranging from $4 to more than $300, depending on income and household size.

The average replacement benefit is estimated at $62, Bremby said.

To be eligible, clients had to be enrolled in SNAP at the time Irene hit Connecticut.
