Storm could strand CT air passengers for days

A major winter storm that has shut down airports in Hartford, New York and the rest of New England could leave passengers stranded for days, according to The Associated Press.

Early Monday morning departures and arrivals out of Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks were delayed or outright cancelled, according to the airport’s Web site. The airport’s problems with the snow replicate those throughout the rest of the Northeast.

Hundreds of people were stuck Monday morning at New York City-area airports. Port Authority spokeswoman Sara Beth Joren says they expect to reopen the runways in the afternoon.

Delta Air Lines says it canceled 700 flights for Monday. The world’s second-largest airline company – and the No. 1 flight provider out of Bradley – hopes to resume normal operations by early Tuesday.

Once the airports reopen, passengers will have a hard time finding open seats on later flights. Seats are already scarce because of the busy holiday season. And airlines are operating fewer flights than they did before the recession.

Boston’s Logan Airport spokesman Phil Orlandella says airlines are saying rebooking could drag into Friday.
