A new Stop & Shop store in Waterbury with enhanced Kosher offerings is set to open on Friday.
Stop & Shop is moving its existing grocery store in Naugatuck Valley Shopping Center across the street into the former ShopRite, which closed in November 2022.
The new 70,000-square-foot supermarket will have modern amenities and will feature one of the largest Kosher selections of any Stop & Shop, the company said in an announcement.
The Kosher section will cater to Waterbury’s Orthodox Jewish population, which has grown by 350% over 24 years, according to the announcement.
A ribbon-cutting for the new store at 943 Wolcott St. is set for 11 a.m. Friday. Mayor Paul K. Pernerewski Jr. and Rabbi Yehuda Brecher, principal of Yeshiva K’tana of Waterbury, are expected to speak.
The existing Stop & Shop at 920 Wolcott St. will permanently close at 6 p.m. Thursday.
To commemorate the new store’s grand opening, Stop & Shop will donate $7,500 to Children’s Community School and $7,500 to UConn Waterbury to support both school’s food pantries.
Stop & Shop, which is owned by the Dutch company Ahold Delhaize, has three locations in Waterbury.
