The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said it has started its fall stocking of Atlantic salmon.
On Tuesday, the agency released 300 fish into the Naugatuck River and Mount Tom Pond. Later this week, it will release 300 more into the Shetucket River and Crystal Lake in Ellington. In early October, it will stock an additional 400 salmon.
The fish were raised in the Kensington State Fish Hatchery and are the progeny of sea-run fish that returned to the Connecticut River.
