New and more stringent federal ozone standards will prompt state environmental officials to enforce restrictions on fuel-burning equipment.
The state Department of Environmental Protection said Tuesday that an increased number of days this spring and summer will be officially classified as “unhealthy air days” as a result of the new federal ozone standard.
As a result, emergency generators and some power plants used during peak energy demand will face greater restrictions on days that ozone levels exceed the standard.
Ground-level ozone is an air pollutant and is a key ingredient of urban smog.
