The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, the Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Steamboat Co. and the town of Greenwich are participating in a multi-agency drill to simulate a marine accident and pollution incident on Long Island Sound.
The exercise — which will also involve the U.S. Coast Guard, National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and a slew of other public and private entities — will take place Sept. 17.
The drill is part of the National Preparedness for Response Exercise Program, a voluntary collaboration between government and industry to meet requirements of the Oil Pollution Act of 1990, which was passed after the Exxon Valdez spill.
The drill will be the first to test newly enacted vessel salvage regulations.
