State regulators have decided against fining Connecticut Natural Gas Corp. for problems with meter readings that affected the bills of about 3,400 customers last winter.
Instead, the state Department of Public Utility control issued a decision that recommends CNG donate $150,000 to the state’s Operation Fuel charity that helps low-income residents pay their heating bills.
Regulators say the utility inadequately supervised its meter readers, causing the billing problems.
The utility blamed four employees who its says submitted false meter readings. It says all four have been fired.
State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal and Consumer Counsel Mary Healey both criticized the DUPC penalty as too lenient. (AP)
