State lets Hartford keep stadium admissions tax

Hartford is getting some help from the state to pay off debt for its new minor league baseball stadium.

As part of the budget implementer bill passed by the Senate Thursday, lawmakers exempted Hartford’s Dunkin’ Donuts Park from the state’s 10 percent admissions tax, and will allow the city to keep that revenue instead.

Fiscal analysts project the city could reap up to $400,000 annually from the tax.

New Britain Stadium will also be exempted from the admissions tax and will be able to keep those revenues, estimated to be around $100,000 annually.

In addition, all other municipalities will be able to charge a 5 percent surcharge (in addition to the state’s 10 percent tax) on admissions to a host of event sites, including: heaters; lecture and concert halls; amusement parks and fairgrounds; dance halls; sporting facilities, such as ball parks, race tracks, tennis courts, golf and miniature golf courses, skating rinks, beaches, swimming pools, and gyms; stadiums and amphitheaters; convention centers; auto, boat, camping, home, dog, and antique shows; and other similar venues and events.
