State individual tax deadlines extended to May 17

The state’s tax authority has extended filing and payment deadlines for individual 2020 income tax returns to May 17, matching a federal extension due to pandemic disruptions.

“To further assist and support [taxpayers], Connecticut will align with the extended federal deadline,” Department of Revenue Services Commissioner Mark D. Boughton said.

The Treasury Department announced Wednesday that federal income tax filings and payment deadlines would be extended until May 17. The postponement applies only to individual taxpayers, including those who pay self-employment tax.

Since Connecticut’s individual return begins with the federal adjusted gross income calculation, it makes sense to do the federal return first and align with federal deadlines, Boughton added.

“Given the relatively late start to the federal income tax filing season and recent passage of the America Rescue Plan Act, which includes provisions that impact tax filing this year, yesterday’s announcement is understandable,” Boughton of the federal extension.
