State income tax lags behind projections

State income tax collections for April continue to lag behind projections, a disturbing trend that suggests there may be trouble ahead for the state budget in both the current fiscal year and the next, according to Gov. M. Jodi Rell.

“I have asked DRS to give me daily updates throughout April, because these figures will have a tremendous impact on the course of this year’s budget and the next,” Rell said in a statement. “As the national economic picture grows gloomier, the decisions we make in the coming days become more and more important. Our job as leaders is not only to weather this storm but to position Connecticut to make the most of the economic improvement that inevitably follows a downturn. One way to do that is to avoid overloading budgets with expensive programs and services.”
