State housing permits down in Sept.; Milford leads region

The city of Milford topped the New Haven region for new housing units last month, although the number of permits approved across Connecticut is down from the same time a year ago, state figures show.

Statewide, 104 Connecticut cities and towns authorized 407 new housing units in September, down from 541 in Sept. 2016, according to data released Thursday by the state Department of Community and Economic Development.

In New Haven and Middlesex counties, Milford led with 12 new units, followed by Branford with six and Prospect with three. Windsor Locks issued the most permits in the state at 160.

Buildings with five or more units made up most of the new housing approvals statewide, at 204, followed by single-family units at 185.

The latest approvals bring the state’s year-to-date total for the first nine months of 2017 to 2,691 new housing units, a 17 percent drop from the 3,244 approved during the same time a year ago, according to the figures.

Despite the decline from last year, September still posted the highest housing permit activity of any month so far in 2017.
