State gets first geographic information officer

The Office of Policy and Management recently announced the selection of Alfredo Herrera to serve as the state’s first geographic information officer.

OPM Secretary Melissa McCaw said the role will provide the state with better information and data for “analysis, planning and delivery of key services.”

The position involves compiling data which leaders can use to make decisions, she noted. Examples might include identifying dangerous intersections, coordinating disaster response, managing property assets and reducing crime and health disparities.

“A wide-range of disciplines benefit from easy-to-access, high quality and updated maps and data from managing water, land and habitats to utilities, recreation and research, economic prosperity, marketing and business,” McCaw said.
