State files lawsuit over failed $6.2 million system

Attorney General Richard Blumenthal is suing a Virginia company over a failed $6 million upgrade of a major law enforcement database.

State officials say Maximus failed to fix some 800 defects in the retooled database system. They have not put it into operation for fear it could endanger police and the public.

About 15,000 law enforcement officials and others use the system to look up everything from motor vehicle information to protective orders.

The breach of contract lawsuit was served Thursday and will be filed in Hartford Superior Court.

Blumenthal says the state has already spent $3 million on the upgrade and millions in related expenses.
