State employment jumps up

The state Department of Labor reports that Connecticut’s non-farm employment jumped by more than 19,000 from Nov. 2006 to Nov. 2007.

The latest figure for non-farm employment in November was 1,702,900, an increase from the Nov. 2006 total of 1,683,600, and is 900 jobs greater than the figure for this October. The employment numbers are encouraging, following a temporary decline in October, because it represents an almost 13,000 employee increase from the beginning of the year, said state labor economist John Tirinzonie.

The biggest month-to-month job gains were in the professional and business services and information sectors, while the number of construction jobs were flat. Two sectors that took hits were financial activities companies, down 200 jobs since October, and manufacturing, which dropped another 200 jobs. But the decline was less severe than it had been for the rest of 2007.
