State delivers 5K tons of salt to depleted town stockpiles

The state’s Department of Transportation has delivered nearly 10 million pounds of road salt to 42 cities and towns facing shortages, officials announced.

The communities receiving salt deliveries from DOT are those aren’t signed onto the state’s contract with provider International Salt.

The DOT’s own stockpiles are adequate to last the winter, so the agency is deferring its contracted deliveries to the municipalities.

East Hartford topped the list of recipients at 400 tons of salt.

Gov. Dannel Malloy last week asked President Barack Obama to declare a state of emergency, which would allow the state to seek federal funds to help pay for the additional salt needs.
