State assessing need for firearms, hunting education

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is assessing the need for firearms and hunter safety education in the state, interest in hunting and sport shooting opportunities, and the extent to which demand for such opportunities is being met or falling short.

DEEP hopes the process will help it improve its programs in the state.

DEEP has set up what it calls a dedicated “Town Hall forum” website. Residents can access the Town Hall forum website and leave comments and suggestions at www.cttownhall.org. The website will stay live until January 8, at which point comments will be reviewed. Residents are encouraged to log onto the website and submit responses to prepared questions as well as interact with one another in an exchange of opinions and ideas.

The department said in a statement it “recognizes that opinions on hunting, sport shooting, and trapping may range widely among residents.” The forum is intended to provide an opportunity for residents to share their thoughts in what it hopes will be “a civil manner.” Forum discussions will be moderated.
