New Britain-based Stanley Black & Decker is recalling about 2.2 million sledgehammers due to a risk that “the head of the sledgehammers can loosen prematurely and detach unexpectedly during use, posing an impact injury hazard to the user,” according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The recall affects fiberglass sledgehammers sold under the DeWALT, Stanley and Craftsman brands in the U.S., as well as about 53,000 in Canada. It was issued Thursday.
The recall comes after the company received 192 reports of the sledgehammer heads detaching, including two reported injuries to consumers’ face and head, according to CPSC’s recall notice.
The sledgehammers were sold at Home Depot, ACE Hardware and other stores nationwide and online at Amazon.com and other sellers from November 2013 to November 2022. The sales price was between $18 and $26 and the products were manufactured in Vietnam.
