Stamford’s zoning board approves plan to demolish St. John’s Towers, build 305-unit apartment building

A significant change to Stamford’s skyline took a big step forward on Monday night.

The city’s four-member Zoning Board unanimously approved a plan to raze two remaining St. John Towers apartment buildings, at 109 Tresser Blvd., and replace them with a 10-story, 305-unit apartment building.

The Planning Board approved the proposal in June, after St. John Urban Development Corp. filed the all-affordable-housing plan in May.

The new building will have 101 one-bedrooms units, 100 two-bedrooms units and 104 three-bedroom units for families earning between 30% to 80% of the area median income.

St. John built the two, 17-story cylindrical towers and a third identical tower at 100 Tresser Blvd. in 1971 to provide a total of 360 affordable units in downtown Stamford as part of a government program.

The two remaining St. John Towers have 240 affordable units, but the buildings are mostly vacant, according to an application filed with the city.

Charlotte, North Carolina-based developer Quarterra knocked down the tower at 100 Tresser Blvd. in 2019 to make way for The Smyth, a 507,009-square-foot apartment building with 414 market-rate units on 1.7 acres that opened in 2023.
