Stamford’s Harman Int’l buying Indian telematics firm

Stamford home- and auto-audio electronics maker Harman International is expanding its India design-engineering footprint with a pending purchase of a fledgling company involved in telematics and other technology for fleet vehicles.

Harman said Tuesday its purchase of five-year-old Interchain Solution, of Bangalore, should close later this month. It didn’t say what it’s paying.

Interchain specializes in developing telematics, fleet management, Android based in-vehicle infotainment and location-based solutions.

Harman said Interchain’s technology will augment its own automotive infotainment and telematics offerings.

Harman is best known for its Harman-Kardon, JBL, Infinity, Lexicon and Mark Levinson brands of home-auto audio equipment.

Meantime, Wired.com reports that Harman’s European division has unveiled a concept vehicle in which a driver uses facial or hand gestures to turn a car radio on or off, control volume or change stations.
