St. Francis unveils solar array

St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center this week unveiled a rooftop solar array that it expects to yield more than $600,000 over the next two decades.

The 535-kilowatt array’s nearly 1,500 panels are located atop the Hartford provider’s parking garage on Collins Street.

St. Francis said it worked with Soltage to qualify for funding from the state’s Zero Emissions Renewable Energy Credit (ZREC) program. Soltage owns the panels, so the hospital didn’t have to spend any money upfront. It will pay Soltage for the electricity generated, under a 20-year power purchase agreement.

The panels aren’t the first example of distributed generation at St. Francis. In 2012, it installed two 400-kilowatt fuel cells.
