Winterberry Gardens, a Southington-based landscape design and maintenance company, is pushing deeper into New England with the acquisition of a Maine landscaping firm, its latest growth move since taking on private equity backing in 2024.
The company said it has acquired Willie C. & Sons Landscaping LLC of Topsham, Maine, in a deal that closed March 24. Terms were not disclosed.
Willie C. & Sons is a landscaping company that handles residential and commercial property maintenance, design and construction. Nick Cloutier, the company’s president, will stay on with the company following the deal, the companies said.
For Winterberry, the purchase extends a footprint that already reaches across much of New England and gives the company a foothold in Maine. Founded in 1985, the Southington firm employs roughly 175 people and provides landscape design and installation, irrigation, lighting, lawn care, fertilization and ongoing property maintenance for residential and commercial clients, along with golf-course irrigation work.
The deal follows a recent change in Winterberry’s ownership. On Oct. 1, 2024, the firm became a portfolio company of Gemini Investors through a recapitalization. Gemini, based in Wellesley, Massachusetts, targets lower middle market companies and has invested in more than 180 businesses across sectors that include business services, consumer products, manufacturing and health care.
