Southington bookkeeper guilty in $370K embezzlement scheme

A Southington bookkeeper has admitted to embezzling $370,000 from a Glastonbury home-medical supplier where she worked, prosecutors say.

Lydia Cabrera, 36, pleaded guilty Wednesday in New Haven federal court to one count of bank fraud related to an embezzlement scheme she carried out at A2Z Home Medical Supplies, the Connecticut U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

Cabrera is scheduled for sentencing Feb. 11, and faces a maximum prison term of 30 years. Cabrera, who had been detained since her arrest in March, was released on bond pending sentencing, prosecutors say.

According to court documents, from Aug. 2016 to Aug. 2018, Cabrera was A2Z’s bookkeeper and had access to its online merchant payment system.

Days after being hired, Cabrera started using the online merchant payment system to steal from the company by falsely representing that A2Z customers had sought refunds, authorities say.

Cabrera more than 200 times input her personal debit card information as the card to which the funds should be returned. She embezzled approximately $370,000 through the scheme, authorities say.

The case is being investigated by the FBI.
