Sodexo to lay off maintenance staff for travel plazas

Sodexo, whose employees have been providing cleaning and grounds maintenance services at state travel plazas, notified the state this week that it will lay off 116 workers at the end of June.

Sodexo is a French company that provides a range of “quality of life” services, including catering, facilities management, and personal and home services.

Amanda Lindenmoyer, a human resources business partner with Sodexo, filed the Worker Adjustment & Retraining Notification Act (WARN) notice with the state’s Department of Labor. In it, she indicated all the affected workers are environmental service attendants, and their positions will be eliminated as of June 30.

The decision came after Sodexo received notice on May 1 from its client, Project Service LLC, that it would no longer be using Sodexo to perform custodial and maintenance services after June 30.

Project Service LLC owns and operates 23 Connecticut service stations along state highways, according to its website. These include travel plazas on Interstate 95 in Darien, Fairfield, Milford, Madison and Branford; on Route 15 in Greenwich, New Canaan, Fairfield, Orange and North Haven; and on Interstate 395 in Montville and Plainfield.

As a result of Project Service’s decision, Sodexo will cease its operations at the travel plazas and terminate employment of its employees who worked there, the notice states.

“The client has informed us that the client will be providing these services [instead],” the notice adds.

The impacted employees are associated with Sodexo’s offices at 35 Corporate Drive in Trumbull. Sodexo has a regional office in Waltham, Mass., and it has operations worldwide, according to its website.

This is the second state WARN notice from Sodexo in recent months. The company previously notified the state it would lay off 65 workers it has employed at the University of Bridgeport campus in May. Sodexo has been involved in the university’s dining operations.
