Smithland Pet & Garden Centers to close all locations in CT, MA

A North Branford-based pet supply and garden center announced that it will close all 13 of its locations in Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Smithland Pet & Garden Centers, formerly known as Agway, will begin closing-out sales Tuesday.

Discounts are available in-store only. Online sales have been discontinued.

Smithland has Connecticut locations in Bethel, Manchester, Middlefield, North Branford, North Haven, Old Saybrook and Southington.

All sales are final. Returns can be made for purchases made prior to May 6, with receipt, until May 20.

Checks are no longer being accepted; credit cards are OK.

Also, store fixtures and equipment will be available for sale.

The business began about four decades ago. Agway stores were rebranded under the name Smithland between 2016 and 2019, following an acquisition.

“This is not a goodbye without deep gratitude,” Smithland said in a statement. “We want to thank every customer who supported us, every pet who wagged through our doors, and every neighbor who chose Smithland for their garden beds, lawns, and backyard flocks. You’ve meant the world to us!”

The company did not respond to an inquiry from the Hartford Business Journal about the reasons for closing the stores, the final closing date and the number of employees impacted.

In 2022, six former Agway properties sold as a package for $10.5 million after having been on the market since 2019-20.
