Slick kicks: Playing footsie on Chapel Street

A regional fashion footwear retailer will soon open a prime storefront location on Chapel Street in downtown New Haven.

Sneaker Junkies will open a store at 976 Chapel Street, opposite the upper Green, by the end of August, according to a company spokesperson. The Yale property, which formerly housed the Connecticut Running store, is part of the Shops at Yale portfolio and managed by Yale University Properties.

The Providence, R.I.-headquartered retailer specializes in higher-end athletic brands from Adidas and Air Jordan to fashion-forward niche labels such as Billionaire Boys Club and 10 Deep.

Since opening a dozen years ago, Sneaker Junkies specializes in streetwear and limited-edition fashion brands. The store’s niche is sneaker brands not typically found in mall chain retail stores.
