Simsbury couple implicates Rowland in campaign donation scheme

A former Republican congressional candidate and her husband pled guilty Monday to conspiring to make illegal campaign contributions, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

Interim U.S. Attorney Deirdre M. Daly said in an announcement that Lisa Wilson-Foley and Brian Foley co-conspired with a former elected official — who the Associated Press and other media outlets said was identified in court as former Gov. John G. Rowland — to make made illegal contributions to Wilson-Foley’s primary campaign in Sept. 2011.

Wilson-Foley wanted Rowland’s work for her campaign to be hidden from the public, due to his 2004 felony conviction related to accepting vacations, flights and home remodeling services from state contractors while governor, according to Daly’s announcement.

Daly said Wilson funneled payments to Rowland through an attorney for his real estate company under the guise of a consulting contract.

The payments constituted campaign contributions, but were not reported to the Federal Elections Commission as required by federal law, according to Daly.

Wilson-Foley and Wilson are scheduled to be sentenced June 23. They face up to a year in prison and a fine of up to $100,000.
