Stratford-based helicopter manufacturer Sikorsky was awarded a $119,982,834 contract from the U.S. Department of Defense on Tuesday.
The Lockheed Martin company will provide logistics, engineering and modification support for the H-53 helicopter for the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and foreign militaries.
The Sikorsky H-53 is a family of military aircraft. Funds will be issued to Sikorsky as individual orders are completed.Â
The vast majority of the work will be completed at the Sikorsky headquarters in Stratford, and it is expected to be completed by March 2028.
Sikorsky recently started laying off salaried workers at its Stratford plant as part of cutbacks related to the company’s loss of a key contract with the U.S. Army.
The company announced in February that it was ramping up production of the CH-53K King Stallion, after two of the heavy-lift helicopters were delivered to the Marine Corps in December.
In recent months, the Australian government announced plans to purchase 40 Sikorsky UH-60M Black Hawks, in a deal valued at $1.95 billion.Â
Sikorsky also recently indicated it is developing a new prototype aimed at carbon neutral flight in future aircraft.
