Sikorsky cutting 386 jobs at upstate NY plant

Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. in Stratford is laying off nearly 400 workers at its factory in upstate New York because of what the company says is a lull in orders for military helicopters, The Associated Press reports.

The announcement Thursday the subsidiary of Hartford’s United Technologies Corp. didn’t divulge the number of jobs being cut, but a notice filed with the state Department of Labor lists the number of layoffs as 386.

The cuts are being made at the Sikorsky Military Completions Center in Big Flats, near Elmira, 85 miles southeast of Rochester.

After the layoffs, the plant will employ about 800 workers — about twice as many as before Sikorsky bought the plant from Schweizer Aircraft Corp. in 2004, Sikorsky spokesman Paul Jackson said in an email Friday.
