Stamford-based Eagle Bulk Shipping announced Tuesday that it acquired two cargo vessels for roughly $34 million as part of an effort to modernize its fleet.
Both vessels are modern, high-specification SDARI-64 scrubber-fitted Ultramax bulk carriers, the company said in a statement.
The shipowner-operator said it paid $16.5 million for the first vessel, which will be renamed the M/V Helsinki Eagle, and acquired the second vessel, which will be renamed the M/V Stockholm Eagle, for $17.65 million.
The ships were built in 2015 and 2016, respectively, at Chengxi Shipyard Co. Ltd. in China, the company said.
The acquisitions are expected to close during the first quarter of 2021.
“We have continued to actively renew our fleet this past year, acquiring three modern/efficient scrubber-fitted Ultramaxes and divesting five of our vintage Supramaxes, with an average age of [approximately] 18 years,” said CEO Gary Vogel in a statement.
He said the company over the last four years has replaced 19 older Supramaxes with 23 of the more modern Ultramax carriers — nearly half its fleet.
“These transactions have vastly improved our fleet makeup — increasing the average size of our ships, improving our fleet age profile and reducing our emissions footprint on a per deadweight-ton basis,” he said.
Headquartered in Stamford, the company has offices in Singapore and Copenhagen, Denmark.
