Shaw’s Supermarkets laying off 967 in CT

Shaw’s Supermarkets Inc. will be laying off 967 workers in Connecticut as it sells all its stores in the state.

Shaw’s parent company, Minneapolis-based SuperValu Inc., says it will be cutting jobs at stores in East Hartford, Manchester, Wallingford, New Haven, Clinton, Southbury and Fairfield.

The layoffs are set to take effect April 13, two weeks after the stores close.

Five Shaw’s stores are being bought by the ShopRite chain, several are expected to become Stop & Shop stores and one will become a Price Rite store.

There are no potential buyers for Shaw’s stores in New Haven and Manchester, where nearly 260 workers face layoffs.
