Shawmut Design building green Choate facility

Shawmut Design and Construction of New Haven has been hired as general contractor for the new environmentally friendly Kohler Environmental Center at Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford.

The Kohler Center is a 32,000-square-foot timber and fieldstone academic center that will provide an interdisciplinary focus on sustainability and the environment.

The building is designed to achieve platinum certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, or LEED, program. It will achieve a zero-net energy usage with the help of a 290-kilowatt solar array.

It was designed Robert A.M. Stern Architects LLP.

Work has begun toward completion next summer 2012 in time for classes for the 2012-2013 school year.

The project is funded through a $20 million gift from plumbing-fixture magnate Herbert V. Kohler Jr., who also is chairman of Choate’s board of trustees.
