Helicopter maker Sikorsky has announced the death of Sergei Sikorsky, the son of founder Igor Sikorsky.
Sergei passed away Sept. 18, at the age of 100.
A military veteran, he served in the helicopter development unit of the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II.
He began his 41-year career with the company in 1951, working in international marketing and sales.
In the 1970s, Sikorsky became a division vice president at the Stratford headquarters, overseeing the company’s co-production programs.
He retired in the early 1990s, although he remained active as a goodwill ambassador at trade shows and other events where he would speak about his family’s legacy.
The aircraft hanger at the Stratford facility was dedicated as the Sergei I. Sikorsky Flight Center in 2019. Sikorsky called it his life’s “single greatest honor.”
“The entire team – past and present – at Sikorsky and Lockheed Martin mourn the passing of a remarkable man, a link to the golden age of aviation who meant so much to the success of our business,” said Rich Benton, Sikorsky vice president and general manager. “Sergei will be greatly missed.”
