Next year, when the Federal Communications Commission pays television broadcasters to give up a block of their spectrum so it can auction it to cell phone companies, Old Lyme’s audio technology manufacturer Sennheiser said it doesn’t want its customers to be left out.
The company said in a November filing with the FCC that the auction will render obsolete certain wireless microphones and monitors that operate in the 600-megahertz range.
Clearing that part of the band for cell companies — which covet lower frequencies for their usefulness in serving rural areas — will also create congestion in the 500-megahertz range, Sennheiser said.
“This is grossly unfair, especially since this will be the second time this has occurred within a few years,” the company said in a statement.
The FCC reallocated a block of 700-megahertz band several years ago.
