Senate OKs med. marijuana for minors

A bill that would allow minors to qualify for registration in the state’s medical marijuana program is headed to Gov. Dannel P Malloy’s desk.

State senators on Friday voted 23-11 in favor of the legislation, which was approved by the House on April 20.

The legislation would allow state residents under 18 years of age who suffer from terminal illness, cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis and other debilitating conditions to receive medical marijuana in edible form.

Minors would need written consent from a parent or guardian, as well as letters from two physicians indicating palliative use of marijuana is in the patient’s best interest.

Department of Consumer Protection Commissioner Jonathan Harris, who oversees the state’s medical marijuana program, said the legislation makes “common sense, compassionate changes.”
