Senate OKs ban-the-box bill

A bill that prohibits most employers from asking about criminal histories during the job application process is heading to the governor’s desk.

The Senate on Wednesday passed the The Fair Chance Employment Act, following the House’s recent approval.

If Gov. Dannel P. Malloy signs the bill it will mean prospective employees are not required to disclose any prior criminal convictions until an employer has made a conditional offer of employment.

The prohibition, commonly referred to as “ban the box,” wouldn’t apply to certain financial or insurance companies.

Lawmakers from both parties said that prohibiting criminal history questions from job applications would help those released from prison get their lives on track.
