The Milford Sears store – slated to close as part of the company’s recent bankruptcy filing – will be laying off 69 employees by the end of the year. Sears filed notices with the state Labor Department this week indicating the workers would be let go by Dec. 31.
The Milford store and another in Waterford were among the 140 outlets marked for closure as part of the retailer’s Chapter 11 filing on Monday.
In Connecticut, Sears stores will remian open in Danbury, Manchester and Meriden.
Kmart, also owned by Sears Holdings, will also see multiple store closings nationwide. Sears Holdings announced in August that the Kmart at 589 Bridgeport Ave. in Milford’s Liberty Rock Shopping Center would shut down. The only other Kmart left in the state, at 595 Straits Turnpike in Watertown’s Ten Acre Mall, remains open.
As part of its bankruptcy statement, Sears Holdings said it would continue to operate its online and mobile platforms, loyalty programs and Sears and private label credit-card rewards programs.
“The company intends to continue payment of employee wages and benefits, honor member programs, and pay vendors and suppliers in the ordinary course for all goods and services provided on or after the filing date,” according to the statement.
