Southern Connecticut area travelers have a new way to get to New York City – via seaplane.
Tailwind Air, a veteran-owned, NYC-based seaplane business, announced this week it has launched a new route between Bridgeport and Manhattan.
The company is offering daily nonstop weekday service for summer and fall between Sikorsky Memorial Airport (BDR) and Manhattan’s Skyport (NYS) seaplane terminal, which is at the Lower East River at the foot of E. 23rd St.Â
For the launch, Tailwind is offering one-way fares on its Cessna Caravan amphibian seaplanes starting at $135, with service beginning July 29.
Peter Manice, co-founder of Tailwind Air, called Bridgeport an important addition to the company’s expanding route network.
The company also offers flights between Manhattan and Boston Harbor, and between Manhattan and Long Island locations, including Shelter Island, Montauk, and East Hampton.
According to Manice, the company’s new Bridgeport service can reduce commuting time by more than 75 percent when rush hour traffic is clogging southern Connecticut and New York highways.
The Bridgeport-Manhattan seaplane flights will take just under 30 minutes. Manice said the company’s Bridgeport to Manhattan pricing is comparable to car service, which would take two hours or longer at peak rush hour.
In the morning, the flights will depart Bridgeport at 7:30 a.m. and arrive in Manhattan at 7:55 a.m. The return trip departs at 7:05 p.m. and arrives back in Bridgeport at 7:30 p.m.
