Scotts’ Jamaican Bakery founder dies at 92

George Alexander Scott, who founded Hartford’s Scotts’ Jamaican Bakery, died Monday at age 92.

Scott died peacefully in his home, according to a statement posted on the bakery’s Facebook account. Funeral planning is currently underway.

“He will be missed here on earth but he remains with us in spirit and in many good memories like the one shared below,” the post said.

Since emigrating to Hartford from Jamaica, and opening the first Scotts’ Jamaican Bakery location on Albany Avenue four decades ago, Scott has been a well-known pillar of Hartford’s business community.

Scott was considered a success story for a Community Economic Development Fund (CEDF), after receiving a CEDF loan to grow his business, eventually becoming known for his Jamaican patties, which the Hartford Yard Goats have sold — along with other food from the bakery — at Dunkin’ Donuts Park since 2016.

The business now consists of three retail storefronts, and a wholesale distribution operation. His son, Gordon Scott, serves as chief executive.

“Please keep the Scotts’ family in prayer as we all mourn this loss,” the Facebook statement said. “We appreciate all of the warm condolences that are already coming our way and ask that everyone please give the family some time and space to grieve.”
