AGE: 37
TITLE: Vice President
COMPANY NAME: Burns & McDonnell
COMPANY’S LOCATION: Wallingford
RESIDENCE: Southington
What do you do? I oversee a team of global practice managers in the electric transmission and distribution, energy, environmental, siting and permitting, construction design-build and facilities fields. I am also responsible for staffing, business development, contract negotiations and regional office planning for the office of over 250 engineering, architectural, environmental and construction professionals.
What do you want to be doing in 10 years? I am excited about the growth and future success of my employer, Burns & McDonnell, and I am driven to continuously provide leadership to my team. In addition to my professional leadership responsibilities, I plan to increase my civic presence through the involvement in local agencies, organizations and charitable foundations. On a personal note, I look forward to watching my three wonderful daughters grow with my wife, Christina.
What is your biggest strength? Leadership is my greatest strength and is rooted in a competitive spirit, impeccable integrity and tireless work ethic. I enjoy motivating and organizing employees to win. I believe integrity is a fundamental requirement to long term business success and that a strong work ethic requires not only hard work but results. I am excited when provided these leadership opportunities to transform something good into something great.
Where do you go for new ideas? Typically I gain fresh ideas from friends, family and work colleagues. In addition, I acquire ideas through technical publications and conference presentations.
What is the best advice you received? Nothing ventured, nothing gained; and proper preparation prevents poor performance. The challenge is balancing these ideologies with the proper amount of planning, strategy and due diligence, in conjunction with a risk-taking spirit.
What service or charitable cause has your attention? I am a proud member of Team Courage, a 20-person cyclist team that rides together in the 2-day, 190-mile long Pan-Mass Challenge. For the fifth consecutive year, Team Courage is participating in the nation’s largest sports philanthropy to raise money in the fight against cancer. Because of Team Courage’s dedication, we have raised nearly $300,000 for the charity, where all proceeds go to the Jimmy Fund. I ride in memory of his stepfather, who passed away after battling cancer, and for his brother-in-law who is currently in remission. I love the camaraderie between the riders, and bringing my fellow employees together to achieve something great for those affected by cancer.
