Science Center Achieves Statewide Goal In Just Two Months

The Connecticut Science Center in downtown Hartford has welcomed visitors from all 169 cities and towns in the state after two months of operations, according to a press release from the museum. A family from the town of Sterling pushed the center over the statewide threshold in mid-August.

As of Aug. 19, more than 89,000 visitors have visited the new Science Center. In addition to attracting visitors from every corner of the state, the Center has welcomed school field trips and other groups from Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Vermont and individual visitors from around the world.

The Connecticut Business & Industry Association, the state’s largest business organization, announced the promotion of Judith K. Resnick to head the association’s Education Foundation. Resnick replaces Lauren Weisberg Kaufman, who is retiring after 26 years as the executive director of the Education Foundation.

The Community Chest of New Britain and Berlin Inc., which announced its reformation earlier this year, has officially “opened its doors” to local grant making and is accepting applications from qualified local nonprofits for the second of two planned rounds of grants this year. The deadline for the second round will be Oct. 1. The Community Chest was formed late last year after the organization’s board of directors voted to separate from the Harford-based United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut, resume its original name and affiliate with the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain.

George Ducharme, the captain of Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center’s team in the Foodshare Walk Against Hunger, was the leading fundraiser in this year’s walk. Ducharme collected $13,664 through pledges in the agency’s 26th Annual Walk, which raised more than $482,000 this year, a record amount. In all, Saint Francis’ team collected $19,657 in the Walk. As a result of its participation in the Walk, the Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center Emergency Food Bank received $13,647 to support its operations. The funds will be used to purchase food along with a new freezer and a new refrigerator. Saint Francis’ Food Bank, the only hospital-based food bank in the United States, supplies food to more than 800 families a month.
