Save the Sound urges conservation of Plum Island

Connecticut environmental advocate Save the Sound has told the federal government to set up Plum Island as conservation land, in order to protect Long Island Sound.

The U.S. General Services Administration is proposing to sell Plum Island, N.Y. in Long Island Sound for private development. The 840-acre property on the island would offer significant waterfront views.

Save the Sound argues that the government’s environmental impact statement does not take into account how a development could impact rare species or the overall health of Long Island Sound.

Joining Save the Sound in the call for conservation instead of development are the town of Southold, N.Y., which includes the island, and federal lawmakers such as Rep. Joe Courtney (D-CT), Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Rep. Michael Grimm (R-NY).
