Connecticut’s annual sales tax-free week is underway.
Under state law, retail purchases of most clothing and footwear under $100 are exempt from Connecticut’s sales and use taxes through Saturday. The exemption extends to each individual item of merchandise purchased, regardless of how many are bought.
Falling only a week or two out from the start of school in most communities, the tax holiday is used by many parents to stock up on new clothes and school supplies for their children. That late-summer shopping rush had been somewhat dampened last year due to the spread of COVID-19 and a subsequent transition to remote learning, but state officials said they’re hopeful a more-normal 2021 will benefit both families and small business owners.
Many retailers offer additional discounts and sales during tax-free week to lure in shoppers.
