South Windsor’s Planning and Zoning Commission on Tuesday unanimously approved plans to build a JPMorgan Chase Bank in the Evergreen Walk area.
Plans call for a 3,500-square-foot branch, branded as a wealth management center, at 190 Buckland Road on a 13-acre site that will provide space for additional commercial development in the future, project architects said.
Officials did not give a specific date for the project’s groundbreaking, but engineers said they intend to move quickly upon approval.
Chase, the largest bank in the United States, announced last year that it plans to open a number of retail branches throughout New England in the next few years, creating up to 350 jobs. The bank has branches in towns along the Connecticut shoreline and in Fairfield County.
The U.S. Department of Treasury, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, which regulates federal banks, also has approved applications to open Chase branches in Avon, Chesire, Hartford, and Ridgefield.
Architect Benjamin Wheeler of South Windsor-based Design Professionals Inc. said the new Chase wealth management center would emphasize a more customer-focused experience and a more inviting interior than traditional bank branches.
The bank will share a driveway and access to the parking lot at M&R Liquors, 206 Buckland Road. Plans also call for a new driveway to be built opposite Hemlock Avenue, which now serves as the northern access road to the Evergreen Walk shopping area.
In other business, the PZC delayed voting to extend a local brickmaker’s earth removal permit after visiting their quarry at 1440 John Fitch Boulevard on Tuesday afternoon and opted to take more time to consider conditions for approval.
Conditions may include limiting the number of weekdays workers can mine and haul clay at the site, requiring measures to prevent dust and noise pollution, and setting benchmarks to ensure that Redland Brick is making plans to relocate their haul road to the north side of the quarry.
Commissioners plan to vote on Redland Brick’s request during their next meeting on April 9.
