S. Korea firm buys seven UTC fuel cells

South Windsor clean energy manufacturer UTC Power has sold seven fuel cells to Samsung Everland to use at a South Korean public utility.

The fuel cells will provide 3.1 megawatts of electricity to the grid from Korean South East Power Co. Ltd. The system also will capture the waste heat generated by the fuel cells to heat area businesses.

UTC’s Korean subsidiary UTC Power International Services – Korea will provide service on the fuel cells. UTC Power is a subsidiary of Hartford conglomerate United Technologies Corp.

Financial terms were not disclosed. The project will be operational in the spring.

Fuel cells generate electricity through an electrochemical process where hydrogen bonds with oxygen. South Korea considers it to be a renewable energy technology, and the country has been fertile ground for sales from UTC Power and Danbury-based FuelCell Energy, Inc.
