Rolls charges Pratt with patent breach

Jet-engine rival Rolls-Royce is suing Pratt & Whitney Co., claiming Pratt’s fan blade for its billion-dollar PurePower motor infringes on a Rolls-Royce patent, MarketWatch reports.

Rolls-Royce claims fan stages on its Engine Alliance GP7200 engine and on Pratt’s PurePower PW1000G engine are too closely designed.

Rolls said it is the same patent that Pratt had earlier sought to have struck from the U.S. Patent Office.

Pratt, a unit of United Technologies Corp. in Hartford, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Pratt has spent more than two decades and invested $1 billion to develop the PurePower as the engine for the next-generation fleet of fuel-efficient, quiet jetliners.
