Killingly specialty materials maker Rogers Corp. says it has in hand more than $3.5 million in U.S. and overseas orders to supply its lightweight, flame-retardant silicone foam for use in the interiors of passenger railcars.
Sound Transit in Seattle, ALSTOM Transport of France and Australia’s RailCorp. have placed orders for Rogers’ BISCO line of silicone foam, which when ignited is slow to smoke and flame, the company said.
The silicone foam’s low density also makes it suitable to use in railcar flooring to deaden vibration, to make durable passenger seats, and for gasket seals that are strong and durable, the company said.
Rogers CEO Robert Wachob said in a statement the orders demonstrate that “BISCO Silicones are the materials of choice” for those kinds of applications.
In the case of Sound Transit, use of BISCO foam was specified in passenger seats aboard all refurbished railcars used on the 73-mile line by 2013, Rogers said.
