Rob. & Cole lays off 30; almost half in Hartford

White-shoe Hartford law firm Robinson & Cole said today it has cut 11 attorneys and 19 staff positions — Hartford accounts for nearly half the cuts — and taken other cost-cutting measures in its seven Northeast offices as demand for legal services wanes.

Five lawyers and nine support staff in the Hartford office lost their jobs, officials said. All the firm’s offices in Hartford, New London and Stamford; Boston; New York City, Albany and White Plains, N.Y.; and Sarasota, Fla., remain open.

“We take these steps with deep regret, and it is difficult for us to say goodbye to some colleagues, but we, like every other business, are experiencing the effects of the economic downturn,” said John B. Lynch Jr., who days ago officially took over as managing partner.

“It’s crucial that we align our resources so that we can continue to provide our clients with cost-efficient services,” he said.

Lynch also said that the firm would maintain its summer associate and incoming fall associate programs for 2009.
