Mission: The goal of Riverfront Recapture is to restore public access to the Connecticut River in Hartford and East Hartford in ways that enhance the quality of life for people who live and work in the region, as well as making the riverfront an attractive destination for visitors and a catalyst for economic investment.
Background: Riverfront Recapture was created in 1981. It has built a strong public-private partnership that supports its efforts to design and construct public parks and riverwalks along the banks of the Connecticut River. In 1998, it became responsible for managing the completed portions of the riverfront parks for the city of Hartford and the town of East Hartford, including programming activities that include rowing, a challenge course, sporting events, concerts and festivals. In 2008, more than 750,000 people visited the riverfront parks. Riverfront activities are funded through corporate sponsorships, grants from individuals, vendor fees, and other sources of earned income such as parties at the Greater Hartford Jaycees Community Boathouse. The majority of design and construction costs are funded by grants from the state and federal governments, although contributions from individuals, corporations, and foundations funded the boathouse and downtown stage canopy.
Major Fundraiser: The Big Momentum (Big Mo’) will be held on Oct. 24.
Volunteer Needs: Those interested in ssisting with events, park cleanups, and other activities should contact Kenya Hairston at (860) 713-3131 ext. 301.
