Rescission round two: $31.5M

The Department of Developmental Services, which mainly serves state residents with intellectual disabilities, will take the largest cut of a second round of $31.5 million in budget rescissions, according to by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy.

DDS, which oversees a network of residential, employment, clinical and other support services, faces a rescission of nearly $8.4 million in budgeted funding. More than $3 million of the cut will come from its wages and salaries account, and another $3 million will come from its employment opportunities and day services account.

The DDS cut follows a previous $55 million rescission from its budget announced in November. The agency said at the time it would address those cuts with a mix of leaving vacated positions unfilled, cuts to maintenance, legal and IT costs, and delaying some services.

The state’s judicial branch will take the second largest of the recently announced cut, at $6 million.

Meanwhile, UConn and UConn Health Center face cuts of $2.3 million and $1.3 million, respectively.

And the Board of Regents’ budget will be reduced by $2.6 million.

Malloy’s first round of rescissions, announced in November, totaled $54.7 million, but only reduced the state’s deficit by about half that amount.
