The University of Connecticut men’s basketball team has found a replacement for the seemingly irreplaceable Tom Moore as its general manager, according to a published report.
ESPN on Monday confirmed published reports that the Huskies will hire Charlie Stevens, who has served as director of grassroots scouting for the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs since 2025
Stevens will succeed Moore, who in July announced plans to retire after taking on the GM role in the name, image and likeness era only last year.
Moore concluded the eighth season of his second stint at Connecticut last year, his 21st overall at UConn and his 39th season in basketball. He was on the bench for part of four national championships — 1999 and 2004 with former coach Jim Calhoun, and 2023 and 2024 with coach Dan Hurley. That is the most for any assistant coach in the modern era of the NCAA Tournament.
Before being promoted last year to his current role, Stevens had served as player engagement coordinator for the Spurs since 2023.
He played college basketball in Division III at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. Over three seasons, the 6-3 guard played in 53 games, averaging 4.4 points and 1.5 rebounds per game.
After graduating in June 2021 with a degree in political science and a concentration in international relations, he was hired by the Spurs as a basketball operations strategy and scouting assistant.
According to published reports, for a successor for Moore at GM Hurley was seeking someone with both player scouting experience and international connections.
UConn’s roster for the 2026-27 season includes four foreign-born players.
Stevens has international experience. From Sept. 2020 to May 2021, he served as head video coordinator for Ironi Ness Ziona, a professional basketball club based in Israel. The club plays in the Israeli Basketball Premier League, that nation’s top professional league.
During his college career, Stevens also interned with Pro Hoops Inc., which offers training programs for players and coaches, and Excel Sports Management, a sports marketing agency.
Since 2018, Moore helped the staff recruit and develop a total of 11 NBA Draft picks, 10 First Team All-Conference players and a pair of All-Americans. Among the Huskies he played a lead role in recruiting were national champions Donovan Clingan and Alex Karaban, who became the program’s all-time winningest player.
The choice of a Spurs scout increases the connection between the NBA squad and the Huskies. Former national champion Stephon Castle was the Spurs’ top pick and fourth overall in the 2024 NBA draft, while 2026 graduate Tarris Reed Jr., who helped lead UConn to the national title game, was traded to San Antonio after being drafted 26th overall by the Denver Nuggets.
